This website celebrates the exquisite design, painting, embroidery, and craft organisation skills of a talented Bengali woman--Calcutta-born, later resident in Dhaka, Bangladesh due to the riots attending the partition of India in 1947. It's also about a documentary film of her life and work, in production. See the website's Gallery link for images of her own work.
"They came to her, over roads and over rivers, for inspiration, for guidance, for work. She is Surayia Rahman, a self-trained, passionate artist who guided hundreds of underprivileged women in Bangladesh to create masterworks – exquisitely embroidered tapestries that have been gifted to dignitaries and are admired in collections throughout the world."
Threads: The Art and Life of Surayia Rahman (working title) brings together the many social and historical stories depicted in Surayia’s tapestries, weaving her own personal story through the eras that she illuminated through her art. (much more at kanthathreads links)
